I managed to score a beta key for Little Big Planet the other day. I have to admit that the controls took a little getting used to due to sheer amount of activities. Adjusting to hopping between the three depth planes was a little odd at first, but grows on you quickly. Stephen Fry adds the little comical nuances to the voiceover that just brings the game together. The games helps you out every step of the way, from learning to control your sackboy to creating your first level.

There is just something about this game that makes me smile as I play it. It could be the overly cute sackfolk… or how they playfully interact with their environment… or the creatively designed levels.

I wish I had some screenshots to share with you detailing my gaming experience. The community is definitely going to drive the longevity of this game. The beta had only been out for less than a day, and already there were hundreds of community generated stages. Some very excellent… others, well… they are still learning the system.

During my first multiplayer experience, I was greeted with some intense lag that made the game somewhat frustrating. However, this being a beta, I understand they are working out some kinks.

All in all, my first impressions are great. This has every chance to be a defining game for the Playstation 3. The Media Molecule staff have outdone themselves. I am anxious to et my hands on the full copy of this game.

Viva la Sackboy!

I love Rock Band and have been thrilled about the impending release of Rock Band 2. Of course, my (and many others, I’m certain) main concern dealt with all the DLC songs I’ve purchased for Rock Band. Will they transfer over to Rock Band 2, or will i have to continue playing Rock Band 1 to get my Grateful Dead fix?

Thankfully, Harmonix assuaged my fears and confirmed that all RB1 DLC will work in RB2 with no problems. They didn’t stop there… they went one step further and confirmed that, at least XBOX 360, owners of RB1 can transfer their “on-disc” tracks to RB2. How is that you say??? Read on!

MTV Multiplayer » Harmonix: How ‘Rock Band 2? Lets You Access First Game’s Songs

Well, it’s going to cost any gamer who wants to transport their “RB” 1 songs to “RB2? a little money and it will require two discs — just once. Harmonix PR man John Drake broke it down for me on Tuesday:

Drake said that on the day “Rock Band 2? is released — September 14 for the Xbox 360 version — a patch will be issued for the original game. That title update will add an Export feature to the original “Rock Band” game’s menu. Gamers who select that feature will be prompted to input a password, which will be included with copies of “Rock Band 2.” Then you have to pay.

It has finally happened. I was dreading the day, but I knew it would happen eventually. I have fallen prey to Rock Band deadline pressures and a semi-flawed QA process. Yes, my strat guitar has failed me. No longer does it register my up-strums and my yellow fret button decides to stick occasionally. Needless to say, this will seriously affect my ability to pass just about any song in Rock Band. A sad day indeed.

However, there is hope! I visited http://support.ea.com/rockband and my new replacement guitar is en route. I applaud EA for their quick response to this growing problem. Granted, it has given them a huge black-eye for even happening in the first place, but kudos for owning up to it immediately. And luckily, they had the foresight to support Activision’s guitars from Guitar Hero, so I am not out play completely.

When my guitar replacement arrives, I will keep you updated on the return process. Hopefully, it will be an easy going process. Now, let’s just hope the drum kit doesn’t suffer the same fate.

This week’s game was the XBOX Live Arcade game: Carcassonne. Two members of our group joined the festivities: DirtpileFox and Archbishop Xero. Dirtpile hosted the event.

It was a short gaming evening, as there was some Bioshock gaming to been done. Two complete 4 player games were played: the highest scoring game I’ve yet to see followed by the lowest scoring game. Dirt captured the two victories last night, with Xero taking a solid second placing.

For those keeping track, some statistics:

Archbishop Xero:

Matches Played: 2

Matches Won:0

Total Points: 192

Achievements: Metropolis (25)

Memorable Moment: Completed Gotham City, the 32-point settlement for the achievement.

DirtpileFox:

Matches Played:2

Matches Won:2

Total Takedowns: 213

Achievements: Metropolis (25), Top of the Heap (20)

Memorable Moment: Took a commanding lead of both games and never looked back.

See you next Wednesday with another arcade night. Game of the Night: Worms.
