Halo 3 was the game of the night. Come 9:10pm, three folks had joined the common party, Will Geiger, xxxmexxxSnowDog, and Archbishop Xero. We decided to launch into the campaign. 10 minutes in, Snowdog’s connection failed out, and thus ended the 3-man team.

Geiger and Xero stormed The Covenant level to reclaim their missing achievements for their last run. Granted, it was only on Normal, so it wasn’t much if a challenge. However, they uncovered their first Golden Skull and accessed the three terminals scattered on this stage. The dynamic duo also discovered that a passenger can dive off the edge of a Hornet and promptly kill themselves by faceplanting on a boulder. A video clip of this should be created and shared with the group.

For those keeping track, some statistics:

Will Geiger:

Levels Played: 1

Total Deaths: ~7

Medals: Thunderstorm, Completed Level 7, Completed Normal Campaign

Memorable Moment: Blowing up Xero with a well-placed tripmine on the Bridge to Truth.

Archbishop Xero:

Levels Played: 1

Total Deaths: ~10 (several at the hands of Geiger)

Medals: Thunderstorm, Completed Level 7, Completed Normal Campaign

Memorable Moment: Incinerating Geiger with the Spartan Laser.

“Honorable Mention” Moment: Diving off the back of Geiger’s hornet to his untimely, but humorous, demise.

xxxMExxxSnowDog:

Levels Played: <1

Total Deaths: 1 (death by Server Disconnection)

Medals: none

Memorable Moment: Complaining loudly and frequently over connection issues.

In other news, PuzzleQuest was released on XBLA. From the looks of it, whiteh0wler took that game by storm last night. Xero logged on for some demo action and was pleased to see a faithful recreation of the Nintendo DS version of the title. This could be a viable option for some future game night action.

During the Wednesday Game Night last night, whiteh0wler and I were playing through some of the many Xbox Live Arcade games. We downloaded and tried Geon Emotions. I was hopeful for a fun multiplayer gaming experience with great gameplay and music. He was significantly less thrilled about playing the game. So we played the game while discussing it’s pros and cons over pizza.

The demo allows you to play multiplayer via splitscreen, which is good. I’ve yet to try the single-player mode, so I’ve no impressions to give there. We fired up the multiplayer and we were allowed to choose from two “emotions”: passion and rage. Since they didn’t have my then current emotion of apathy to select from, I went with passion. h0wler went with rage.

We get into the first match and start rolling around the stages, which I admit are neat and somewhat mesmerizing. The maps reminded me of the graphs I used to make on my TI-82 calculator back in high school calculus, except more colorful and 3d-ish. The gameplay turn out to be something along the lines of Pac-man meets racing meets a TI-82 Graphing Calculator… and it ended up being as much fun as it sounds. Rolling around collecting dots and making it to a goal before your opponent.

All in all, I was not impressed with this title. It needs more interaction between the players. While powerballs exist to interfere with your opponents progress, you rarely seem to end up anywhere near them to use the power-ups. It was fun for 10 minutes or so, but I cannot see myself plopping down 800 points for this game.

Download the demo and see for yourself. I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on it.

At PelicanSteve’s request, the group was invited to play Gears of War. At 9:10pm it was clear that everyone, except DirtpileFoX and Archbishop Xero, had better things to do that get in some good gaming. Instead of getting some time in with the new (to some) Hidden Fronts maps in multiplayer, Dirt and Xero joined forces in co-op Insane campaign.

Dirt was hosting the match and was halfway through Act 2. Xero joined the battle by helming the UV Ray on the (name forgotten) Tumbler. On Insane, it is apparently an act of Congress to get past this stage. For 25 agonizing minutes, Dirt drove while Xero toasted numerous Kryll from the sky, all the while dying a mere 100 yards from the goal line. We memorized the attack formations of the Kryll. We developed a fine racing line through the city streets. We even invented several new expletives throughout the process.

And just before we’d given up hope, we had discovered a glitch in the system. Just as the Kryll had blown up our shiny new truck, inertia took us over the goal line. As we exploded, the game congratulated us by moving us to the final battle of Act 2. A sigh of relief… Neither of us ever have to play that level again…

Some progress points… Dirtpile pointed out a COG tag to Xero bringing his total up to 24 (only 6 left). Dirt also completed all of Act 2 on Insane, giving him a gamerscore boost.

It was a short gaming evening, as there was some Bioshock gaming to been done. Two complete 4 player games were played: the highest scoring game I’ve yet to see followed by the lowest scoring game. Dirt captured the two victories last night, with Xero taking a solid second placing.

For those keeping track, some statistics:

Archbishop Xero:

Matches Played: 2

Matches Won:0

Total Points: 192

Matches Won:2

Total Takedowns: 213

Memorable Moment: Took a commanding lead of both games and never looked back.

Week #4 of the Weekly 360 Game Nights. Here we are a month later and still going fairly strong for our group. This week’s game was Burnout: Revenge. Three members of our group joined the festivites: DirtpileFox, PelicanSteve, and Archbishop Xero. Archbishop Xero hosted the bouts.

The ranked goodness began with a series of 1 Round matches. PelicanSteve boosted his way to an easy victory the first match. Dirtpile won the second match with a .2 second win over Archbishop. And in a stunning turn of events, Xero pulled out a win on the third match thoroughly disappointing PelicanSteve. We raced and wished for a new car: The Krispy Kreme Racer (hot doughnuts NOW!).

Then things took a turn for the more interesting. The room piled up with random racers from around the world. Spyder888, ThwartedVash, and (ironically enough) BagODohNuts (and others) competed throughout the evening. Once Vash was cleansed with a little ointment, DohNuts found out that we weren’t actually out to get him.

There was no Takedown Fest tonight… and no achievements awarded, that I am aware of.

For those keeping track, some statistics:

PelicanSteve:

Matches Played: 10

Matches Won: 3

On a sidenote: Bran started her own game night this evening. Branching out with the Wii, she laid some cooking smack down in Ratatouille. Being a single player game, there was not mucht rash talk, but suffice it to say that the TV received quite the verbal beatdown.

For those keeping track, some statistics:

Last night saw a resurgence of Gears of War. The multiplayer shenanigans started off with a bang in the Canals. DirtpileFoX led the COGs to victory with 209 points. Stewie13 gave tactical support while Archbishop Xero clapped loudly in the background in staunch moral support of the team. PelicanSteve proved his worth by adding a whopping 13 points for the Locust squad. Last night’s game play saw many new faces to our group, of which Stewie13 may become a regular.

After Bishop cut out early, taking his 18 points and going home, he sensed the following monumental moments of game play.

Stewie13 hid shamefully behind a burnt our shell of an automobile while PelicanSteve tagged him with a frag. Pelican danced for joy too early as DirtpileFoX delivered justice in the form of deathly pistol whip. Champion777 broke through gaming barriers, looking for the finish line, and was taken out with a well-placed boomshot from the bridge.

Week #2 of the Weekly 360 Game fest has come and gone. Last night, the game of the night was Burnout: Revenge.

The festivities began as PelicanSteve hosted the first match. It was an all out race to the finish (where else would we go?) between him, Archbishop Xero, and SlippyWeaselz. Racing through the back alleys of the Motor City warehouses, the mountainous hill of the Alps, and the inner city tracks of Asia Minor – the group hustled through many exciting races. Round for round, PelicanSteve stole the pole and never relented… finishing with 3 First places rounds. The results of Match #1: PelicanSteve (12), SlippyWeaselz (10), Archbishop Xero (8).

Match #2 started with a bang as the same group launched out of the gates, not towards the finish line, but into each other. The Takedown Wars had begun. PelicanSteve and Xero, having learned from previous matches, came to bat with the Low Rider (medium weight). Slippy came to the gunfight with his sword, the (superlight) Indy car. The carnage persist for 25 minutes as the combatants trudged around the track, blowing each other up as many times as possible… Many civilians perished during this race… and in the end, we accrued 200+ takedowns. Race results: PelicanSteve, Archbishop Xero, SlippyWeaselz.

For those keeping track, some statistics:

PelicanSteve:

Matches Played: 3

Matches Won: 2

Total Takedowns: ~80

Memorable Moment: Forcing Archbishop Xero off the freeway into a concrete pillar… exploding into a fireball… down three stories… into oncoming traffic. Found to be genetically predisposed to liking chicken.

Archbishop Xero:

Matches Played: 3

Matches Won: 1

Total Takedowns<geckopastefix></geckopastefix>: ~80

Memorable Moment: Shot PelicanSteve 30 feet straight into the air for the takedown. Backed into SlippyWeaselz… exploded… credit went to Pelican.

SlippyWeaselz:

Matches Played: 3

Matches Won: 0

Total Takedowns<geckopastefix></geckopastefix>: ~70

Memorable Moment: Took out the Low Riders by driving underneath them. Ordered takeout chinese: Orange Chicken.

See you next Wednesday. Game of the Night: Halo 2. Backup games: Gears of War, Catan, and Worms.

The weekly sessions of 360 game play started off to a decidedly weak start.

Last night’s session of Gears of War was fought between DirtpileFox, whiteh0wler, and Archbishop Xero, and several other unknown soldiers.

The first 3 matches were mano y mano bouts between DirtpileFox and Archbishop Xero. Xero was humiliated in all 3 matches by a dominant Dirtpile. A rivalry between brothers seems to transcend into the gaming world.

The tide seemed to have turned when whitey joined the frey. Two on one: Dirtpile has an obvious disadvantage, right? That’s where you’re wrong. The humiliation continued as Dirtpile piled up the frags against the weakling duo. In a dismal showing, it was 6 rounds to 1 for the victor.

To close out the evening’s play, 2 more matches were played including intarweb outsiders. Xero and Dirtpile against the masses. Saving some face, Xero managed to win a round while Dirt took it all the way home for the win, including rallying from a 3 round deficit.

For those keeping track, some statistics:

DirtpileFox:

Matches Played: 5

Matches Won: 5

Total Kills: ~45

Memorable Moment: Headshot on Archbishop Xero from 3 blocks away… using the pistol.

Archbishop Xero:

Matches Played: 5

Matches Won: 2

Total Kills: 12 (including 4 on Dirtpile)

Memorable Moment: Boomshot kill on 2 intarweb opponents for a decisive round win.

whiteh0wler:

Matches Played: 1

Matches Won: 0

Total Kills: 0

Memorable Moment: Attempted to frag his own teammate… repeatedly.

Join us on Sunday night for another session. Either Burnout: Revenge, Halo 2, or Bomberman Live!
