XNA Game Development February 26, 2007

Posted by xerocube in : Misc., XBOX 360 , add a comment

Microsoft released the XNA Game Studio back in December of 2006. This has placed the ability to create games in to the hands of the casual main street gamer. While I have not yet taken the jump to create my own game, I have started looking into what it would take for me to start. In my quest for knowledge, I stumbled across this site: www.xnadevelopment.com.

This site includes many tutorials on the basics of game development from character state to 2D image scrolling. From a beginner’s  point of view, this looks to be a great starting point for me. I will keep you posted on my journey into this new potential hobby.

Wii in 30% of US Households February 22, 2007

Gamasutra News reports today of an interesting Wall Street Journal article predicting that 30% of US Households will have a Wii by 2011. I would go into more detail here, but it’d be better for you to just read the article yourself.

From Gamasutra: Merrill Lynch: Wii In 30% Of U.S. Households By 2011

This to me would be great news, if it were to happen. But if so, Nintendo may want to enhance the current social networking capabilities of the Wii in order to capitalize on a greater install base.

Home Console Power Consumption February 22, 2007

Have you ever wondered how much power your home consoles consume? Well, I have, but have been too lazy (not too mention cheap) to go purchase a power meter in order to find out. Well, the fine folks at hardCORE have taken it upon themselves to compare the Wii, the XBOX 360, the PS3, and a gaming PC in terms of power consumption. They compare power usage through game play, idle time, DVD playback, and Standby (just plugged in) modes.

Are you married, and your wife (or husband) doesn’t support your gaming habit, need to save a little money on your gaming-related gear, need to save on food or clothes (so you can afford your gaming gear), and you have an Xbox Live gamertag, then you should sign up for the Xbox Live Diamond Card. It is free, and well worth it if do crazy things like eat, wear clothes, use a computer, or (most importantly) play games. It is accepted by companies like Quizno’s, Papa John’s, Circuit City, Gamestop, and Tivo as well as many other retailers selling everything from shoes to surround sound systems. Check it out here!

Splinter Cell: Double Agent February 18, 2007

The long anticipated arrival of the latest installment of the Splinter Cell series arrived in October of last year, and it was both a great game, and a bit of a let down. If you have enjoyed the Splinter Cell series, particularly on a Microsoft system, then you will be treated to more of the same great graphics, stealth action, online multiplayer, and the now classic Tom Clancy feel. But, the strength of this game is also its weakness: if you are a veteran of Splinter Cell, then for you, it doesn’t really offer anything new. I suppose this is hard to complain about because Splinter Cell has a great recipe for an enjoyable game, so I highly recommend the title to anyone new to the franchise, but I must say if you are familiar with the series, this one is a rent, but not a buy. – SlippyWeasel

For those lucky enough to get involved with the Halo 3 beta (yeah, Weasel, I’m looking at you), Bungie has released some Q&A on the topic. Even hinting at when the beta will begin, and it doesn’t look like it will be when Crackdown is released. Sorry, chums.
